When Steve first began struggling with pornography, he wished there had been someone safe to talk to – someone who understood both the reality of addiction and the hope of the Gospel.
Today, that experience shapes his ministry.
Steve now serves with Resist Ministries, a Christian organisation helping individuals, churches and schools respond to the harmful impacts of pornography with honesty, compassion and practical support.
Through Resist, Steve promotes and coaches people through an affordable five-week pornography recovery program that combines Biblical hope with practical strategies for overcoming compulsive behaviours. The program, delivered through video sessions and a workbook, can be completed one-to-one or in small groups, and Steve also trains facilitators in local churches to lead it. While the program was originally developed for men, it has also been used effectively by women’s groups.
“I’ve been a pastor for many years and always wished I had someone to talk to about my struggles with pornography,” Steve says.
His work is especially focused on providing a confidential, independent space for Christians, including pastors and ministry leaders, to seek help without fear or shame.
“I want churches to know that we don’t have to keep our sin a secret,” he says. “There’s a place to step into the light. The Gospel gives us that space. We want people to connect their struggle to the Gospel.”
But pornography doesn’t only affect the person viewing it. When Steve disclosed his struggle to his wife Jane, everything changed.
“I felt like my whole world shifted,” Jane recalls. “Thankfully the conversation happened because we were already connecting with people working in this space. I found a support group and received specific help to navigate what healing looked like for me.”
That journey eventually led Jane to establish Quiet Wisdom, a ministry supporting women recovering from intimate betrayal and helping them rediscover wholeness in Christ.
Through coaching, support groups, a blog and a podcast, Jane walks alongside women after what she describes as a “disclosure day” – the moment pornography or sexual addiction comes to light within a relationship.
The groups gently guide women through safety and stabilisation, grief and meaning making, and reconnecting with themselves, others and God, while holding onto hope that healing is possible.
“Engaging with sexual integrity and the damage that’s caused when it’s missing is an untapped opportunity to show the love and grace of Jesus to people in our churches and beyond,” Jane says.
For both Steve and Jane, their ministries exist because they have experienced God’s grace firsthand.
“There’s no way we could have found this healing on our own,” Jane says. “That’s part of why we’re both so passionate about offering that healing to others. God’s power to heal is a work of grace.”
Together, they are passionate about equipping churches to respond well, not simply by addressing sinful behaviour, but by caring for everyone affected.
“We want to teach the people who help in churches how to help without doing harm,” Jane explains. “To offer both grace and accountability, and to understand what’s happening for everyone involved.”
“The use of pornography is not a bar to ministry,” says Jenny Casey, Accreditation and Affirmation Team Leader at NSW & ACT Baptists, “but it is certainly something that our pastors and applicants need to be aware is not helpful or appropriate.”
“Not addressing the issue is the place where the porn becomes destructive,” continues Jane, “this is why we’re talking about it and offering resources and support. People struggling – no matter who they are – can get help.”
Alongside his coaching, Steve regularly runs seminars for church leaders, and together they speak at church events to encourage healthier cultures around sexual integrity.
Their hope is simple.
“We want to create a culture in churches where it’s okay to struggle together,” Steve says. “A culture of grace where people don’t feel they need to pretend but can step into the light and receive the help they need.”
