A warm welcome – Armidale Baptist Receives the 2026 David Brown Scholarship

18 months ago, families fleeing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo arrived in Armidale searching for safety, hope and belonging. Many had lost homes, family members and the life they once knew. When they visited Armidale Baptist Church, they found more than a Sunday gathering. They found people who welcomed them warmly, cared for them practically and embraced them as family.

Among those who arrived was Fernand.

Before coming to Australia, Fernand had spent years serving as a pastor in Congo. But his life was devastated by war. During violent conflict in 2012, his wife and two children were killed. Fernand narrowly escaped with his own life, fleeing suddenly and making his way through Africa before finally arriving in Australia as a refugee.

Fernand’s journey to Armidale carried enormous pain and loss, yet God was not finished with his story.

At Armidale Baptist Church, Fernand discovered a church willing to walk alongside people through pain and rebuilding. As more Congolese families settled in the town, the church became home to a growing multicultural community.

What began with just a handful of visitors slowly became something much larger.

Now the church has more than doubled in size. Today, around one hundred people regularly gather as part of the church community, with both long-term Australian members and newer Congolese families worshipping side-by-side. Their Sunday services are filled with life, singing, prayer, celebration and the joyful sound of different cultures united in Christ.

The transition hasn’t always been easy. The church has spent several years without a permanent pastor and is still on the lookout. But one of the clearest signs of this provision came through the purchase of a bus.

As the church community grew, transport became a major challenge for many refugees and newly arrived families. The call was put out to Baptist Churches across NSW & ACT, and through great generosity the funds were raised to purchase a bus at the end of last year.

In a regional town where distances and transport barriers can easily isolate people, the bus has become much more than a vehicle. Each week it travels through Armidale picking people up for church and church activities, helping to connect families who otherwise may not be able to participate in church life.

Now God is opening the next chapter.

Through the David Brown Rural and Regional Scholarship — created to encourage and equip leaders serving in rural and regional communities — Fernand is being trained for pastoral ministry within the very church that welcomed him. The scholarship was established in memory of David Brown, whose passion was to support pastors and churches serving faithfully in rural and regional Australia. After conversations with David’s family, the decision was made to award the scholarship not simply to one pastor, but to invest in the future of an entire church community.

God is building His church in Armidale.
