Severe cyclones, monsoonal rains and flooding have devastated South and Southeast Asia. More than 1,300 people have died and millions have been displaced, with Sri Lanka and Indonesia amongst the worst affected countries.
Rescuers are still searching for missing people, but it’s reported that in Sri Lanka, over 1.1 million people have been displaced by flash floods and landslides. This is one of the worst disaster events in the country’s history, and the government has declared a state of public emergency. And in Indonesia, well over a million people have been displaced across the Sumatra Island—in North Sumatra alone, more than 3,200 homes and buildings have been submerged.
BWAA is thankful to have long-standing Baptist Partners on the ground in the region well placed and ready to respond. The Asia Floods Appeal will raise much needed funds for:
- Food rations, clean water and hygiene kits so displaced families can survive the first few crucial days
- Emergency shelter items (e.g. tarpaulins, tents and mats), bedding and clothes to protect people from the elements
- Emergency medical support, including psychological first aid to help the injured, sick and traumatised
- Early recovery efforts, to help people start rebuilding or repairing homes and regaining their livelihoods.
Many members of Baptist churches in Sri Lanka and Indonesia have been badly affected. Baptist World Aid is working with Baptist Partners and local Baptist churches in the region to provide emergency aid to families—including food, clean water, hygiene kits, clothes, shelter items and medical support. Can you help with a donation?
