During the Easter school holidays, Lighthouse Baptist Church (Nelson Bay) considered how to engage the young in light of Covid-19 restrictions. Their idea? A ‘Bible Bricks’ Competition – where participants chose a story, scene or moment from The Bible and, using creativity and imagination, recreated it with LEGO. Jacquie Cannon, who is the Administration Assistant at the church, oversaw the initiative. “Our Senior Pastor, Andrew East, came up with the idea as an outreach initiative to promote Youth Activities of the church to the wider community by involving local schools, and also to engage the kids of our church,” Jacquie explains. “As many of the church’s activities and ministries, as well as the school’s, suddenly shut down along with most of society, the competition seemed like a great way to engage families in isolation and kids who were looking for activities over the Easter period. As it coincided with the Lego Masters TV program, engaging the kids was not too difficult, and the majority of our young submitted either one or multiple builds. We are hoping to make it an annual school-holidays competition which, when not limited by the current situation, will include an exhibition and audience vote.”
